ORR music director to open for Jay Leno
Mike Barnicle, the music director of Old Rochester Regional High School, is part of an a cappella group that will open for comedian Jay Leno.
Leno, the former Tonight Show host and Andover native, will perform at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford on Oct. 23. He chose Firedrill! as his opening act.
Barnicle, who lives in Middleboro, is part of the seven-member group that has won Boston’s Harmony Sweepstakes. These vocalists cover contemporary hits, using only their voices like for song such as “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie and “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys.
Said Barnicle, “Although we sing a lot better than Jay does, we're incredibly excited to open for him instead of the other way around. We are all incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share the stage with a world-class entertainer and talent – the one and only, Jay Leno.”
Tickets to see Firedrill! open for the Jay Leno range from $79 to $125 and are available at www.zeiterion.org, 508-994-2900 or at the Zeiterion box office, 684 Purchase St., New Bedford.
Founded in 2005, Firedrill! is known for its passionate vocals and light, witty banter. The group has toured with Martin Sexton, a nationally known American singer-songwriter, and has headlined a cappella festivals across the country.
They say of themselves, “Firedrill! is everything you love about a cappella, without the parts you hate.”
Hear them cover Michael Jackson’s “Working Day and Night” and Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Got to Get You Into My Life.”
