ORR receives sportsmanship award

Old Rochester Regional’s athletics program likes to go above and beyond.

This month, the program was given the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Sportsmanship Award of District D for the 2010-11 school year. District D comprises 45 schools across Cape Cod and a majority of the South Coast region, according to ORR athletic director Bill Tilden.

At the end of each school year, coaches across the state nominate athletes and teams within a conference that kept positive attitudes, treated other teams with respect and played fairly. ORR is in the South Coast Conference with Apponequet, Bourne and Seekonk, among others. The school with the greatest number of votes is then entered on the MIAA district level. ORR had 5 awards out of 19 sports: Girls cross country, field hockey and volleyball; and Boys winter track and tennis.

“It feels very good,” Tilden said. “Last school year we also had the highest winning percentage in the SCC. I think that and this award shows people we’ve really stepped it up. People often look at you differently if you win all the time, but we’ve gone above and beyond and showed sportsmanship at the same time.”

The award was given to the school this month after six team captains presented to the MIAA how ORR had shown and increased sportsmanship on the playing field.

Tilden also said a banner will be made and displayed in the school soon to commemorate the award.
