Mar 7, 2012

The winter sports season is over at Old Rochester Regional High School, with both the boys and girls basketball teams and the ice hockey team making early exits from the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association state tournament.

The boys basketball team’s season came to an end in the first round of the Division 3 South Sectional tournament last Wednesday night, as the ninth-seeded Bulldogs (14-7) fell to number 8 Dighton-Rehoboth 63-60.

The Falcons rode an 8-1 run late in the fourth quarter to the victory, and connected on 10 of their 11 free-throw attempts in the final frame of the tight game.

Dylan Barbosa led D-R with a game-high 21 points. Max Risch scored 20 for ORR, with Matt Teefy and Brendan Parker each adding 10 points.

Things didn’t go much better for the hockey team the following night, as they lost 2-1 in a shootout to Dartmouth in the first round of the tournament. The sixth-seeded Bulldogs finished the season at 12-4-6. ORR controlled much of the play throughout the game, but could only manage to score one goal. It came from Anthony Cammarano, assisted by Bobby Stickles and Cam O’Connor. Tim Kelleher made 20 saves in net.

The week was highlighted by the performance of Ally Saccone at the New England Interscholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships, held last Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury.

Saccone finished in fifth place in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.44, and qualified for this weekend’s national championships in New York. Saccone was also the anchor for the 4x200 relay team that finished 12th at New England Tournament (1:48.17), along with Hannah Walsh, Morgan DaSilva and Paige Santos.
