ORR student looks to become international ambassador with presidential program

Mar 16, 2014

It’s been more than fifty years since President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the People to People movement to promote peace after World War II.

Since then half a million students and teachers have traveled to seven continents with the nonprofit organization People to People Ambassador Program.

Along the way, these delegations of Americans have seen the Berlin Wall fall and met world leaders such as Mikhail Gorbachev and Queen Elizabeth.

Now, Allie Way has an opportunity to witness history herself.

The Old Rochester Regional High School sophomore was nominated and accepted for a trip this summer with stops in Italy, Spain and France.

“Ever since I was growing up, I’ve always wanted to travel the world,” said Way. “You get to meet other people and learn about their culture. I felt like it would be a great experience to have.”

Originally from Falmouth, Way moved to Marion and began ORR her freshmen year. Despite being a newcomer, she was elected vice president of the student council and was homecoming queen.

Not bad for the new girl who admits she can be timid.

Raising money for the trip has been another opportunity for Way to go outside her comfort zone. The 19-day excursion costs $7,500 and amidst school, student council and the lacrosse team, she is contacting family, friends and local businesses to ask for help.

“I’m extremely shy but it’s something I want to do, and if I really want something, I’m going to do the my best to get there,” said Way.

Way and her mom, Elizabeth Muldowney, are also collecting items for a big yard and bake sale fundraiser to be held at Marion Garage on March 29.

Before she goes, Way is learning as much as she can about the three countries she will visit. The program gives delegates homework in advance as well as community service opportunities. The students and leadership also meet once a month to prepare for their July 14 departure.

The tour includes Roman ruins, a meeting with governing officials at the Vatican and a home stay in Spain (luckily Way is in her second year of Spanish.)

“It’s really about getting to know people and exploring the world,” Way said.

For the future paleontologist (or maybe marine veterinarian) with an interest in Roman mythology, the itinerary couldn’t be better.

She also hopes it will fulfill People to People’s mission to better understand other people and cultures and promote peace.

Said Way: “They want kids my age to make friendships and make peace so, for the future, we could have a better world so we could all get along better.”

Way has raised $1,200 to date.
