ORR track teams shine in Conference Championships

Feb 10, 2019

Old Rochester Regional High track teams showed that they could run faster, jump higher and throw farther than other teams at the South Coastal Conference Championship, with the girls as champions and the boys coming in in second.

Competing on Feb.9 at the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, both the girls and boys winter track teams showed that they came for one thing: to win.

In the 10 events the girls scored a total of 73 points, 16 points ahead of their closest competitor, Apponequet, who scored 57.

Leading the way for the girls’ team was a strong team of high jumpers. Lea Bourgeois, Caroline Thomas and Shyann Jaques finished in the top 3 respectively.  Bourgeois and Thomas tied for the top jumps with a height of 5 feet 0 inches.  Jaques took third place with a jump of 4 feet 10 inches. In high jump, ORR not only took the top three places but finished with six athletes in the top ten.

The girls regularly showed up in the top finishers in the running events as well, most notably with Emma Carroll taking the top spot in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:19:81.

The boys’ team finished second overall to Dighton-Rehoboth with a team score of 57.

Speed was the theme for the boys, who finished in the top spot in four of the eight running events.  Runners who finished first include Anthony Childs in the 300 meter dash (38.26 seconds), Adam Sylvia in the 600 meter run (1:28:84), Geoffrey Noonan in the 2 mile run (10:50:52) and Tucker Guard in the 55 meter hurdles (8.27 seconds).
