Planning Board votes against buying old Boy Scout camp property

ROCHESTER - The Rochester Planning Board decided not to recommend the purchase of the property at 0 Mary’s Pond Road.

The Conservation Commission recommended purchasing it, and the property is the site of the Carr Family Bogs and the former Boy Scout Camp.

“I was a little surprised,” owner Deborah Clark said. “Back when I took them through the property…it wasn’t on their priority list. That’s when we went forward to sell.”

Planning Board members said they didn’t think the town had the money for the property, but were concerned about the camp.

“The Boy Scout Camp isn’t there anymore?” Gary Florindo asked.

Clark confirmed that the Boy Scouts were informed two years ago of the intent to sell the property. The Scouts moved out of the camp in February 2017, with plans to use YMCA-owned property on Snow’s Pond instead. The camp had been in use for 45 years.

“That was my only concern,” Florindo said.

The board agreed not to recommend the purchase of the property to the Board of Selectmen, who will have the final say.
