Plumb Library April programs

Apr 4, 2013

Plumb Library has a number of offerings lined up for April.

All programs will take place at the Plumb Library, 17 Constitution Way, Rochester.  Call 508-763-8600 or email info@plumblibrary.com for more information or to register.

‘Just the Facts’ book group

"Just the Facts”, the nonfiction book discussion group, will be reading “The Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth: Popularity, Quirk Theory, and Why Outsiders Thrive After High School,” by Alexandra Robbins.  What do Emma Watson, Stephen Hawking, President Bill Clinton, and Lady Gaga have in common?  They were all bullied in school, and called “geeks” and “nerds.”  In Robbins’ book, she details “Quirk Theory,” following seven real teens as they negotiate high school, looking forward to adulthood where they, like other famous people before them, can lead their own lives.  We will be discussing this book on Thursday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m.  Copies are available at the desk.

Café Parlez

Café Parlez’ selection for April is “My Sister’s Keeper,” by Jodie Picoult. Anna was conceived to be a bone marrow match for her older sister Kate, who suffers from leukemia.  So far, she has never questioned the surgeries, transfusions, and shots that she must go through to keep her sister well.  Like most teenagers, however, Anna is beginning to question who she is and why she is here, but unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister’s needs.  So Anna makes a decision that will affect everyone in her family, and that will possibly have fatal consequences for Kate.

The group will discuss this book on Thursday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m.   Books are available at the desk, or bring your own copy.  Café Parlez is sponsored by the Friends of Plumb Library.

‘Strings and Stories with Grandma Poppy’

Grandma Poppy, a member of the Fall River Symphony Orchestra and retired music teacher, will be making her first appearance at Plumb Library on Thursday, April 18, at 3 p.m. She will present "Strings and Stories with Grandma Poppy.”  Come listen to Jan Brett’s Berlioz the Bear, and learn about string instruments and how they work.  The program is suitable for ages 4 and up.

Mad Science

Join Mad Science on Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m. as they explain the wonderful world of compost.  Children in grades K-6 will learn about decomposition and how it helps the environment.  Participants will make a mini-composter, complete with its own worm.  Pre-registration is required.
