Plumb Library to host art, science activities

ROCHESTER — The Joseph H. Plumb Memorial library will encourage children to get involved in music and science with its August programs. 

On two Tuesdays in August Rochester Memorial School teachers will visit Plumb library with activities for children aged four and up. On Tuesday, July 30 at 10:30 a.m. the Tuesdays with Teachers program will be called Astronomical Alves. On Aug. 6 at the same time the program will feature “Buzz” Weigel. Registration is required for this program. 
 
On Friday, Aug. 2 at 10:30 a.m. international jazz multi-instrumentalist Sagit Zilberman will perform an interactive global music program for families and children. Zilberman is from Israel and studied at Berklee College of Music. She has performed internationally and toured in more than 15 countries.
 
The program introduces audience members to instruments such as the didgeridoo, rainstick, tongue drum, handpan, and saxophone. All ages are welcome, but registration is required.    Weather permitting, this will be an outdoor or show at the Plumb Gazebo.  Otherwise, show will be held in the First Congregational Church Hall.
 
On Wednesday Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. Pat Monteith, NASA solar system ambassador and author will offer a trip back in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing. Monteith’s  presentation will highlight the moon and review the Apollo lunar landing.
 
Find out how NASA plans to return to the moon and build habitats to survive there, and then use it as a launch site for Mars. Participants will enjoy a presentation on the moon and then take part in different hands-on activities.  Ages eight and up and families are welcome. Registration is required.
