Police chase through Mattapoisett, Fairhaven ends in arrest
Following a high-speed chase through Mattapoisett and Fairhaven, a Rhode Island man has been arrested and faces multiple charges.
According to police reports, on Sunday, Sept. 8 at approximately 7:45 a.m, Mattapoisett Police Officer Brett Osetkowski responded to a report of a suspicious motor vehicle parked on North Street in the area of the Saint Anthony’s cemetery. The car was partially in the roadway, obstructing the flow of traffic. Osetkowski found a single male occupant, Estefano J. Lobo, 21, sitting in the driver’s seat. He appeared to be asleep.
After knocking on the window, Lobo sat up and put the window down. Osetkowski detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside vehicle and requested Lobo’s license and vehicle registration.
Lobo could not find his license. Officer Osetkowski observed a black object that he believed to be a gun and ordered the man out of the car at which point he sped off, according to police reports.
Osetkowski pursued Lobo, who took the I-195 west ramp, taking the 240 exit into Fairhaven. The driver continued on 240 at an estimated 100 miles per hour.
Fairhaven police officers set up tire deflation strips at the intersection of 240 and Bridge Street. Lobo avoided them.
Due to the speed of the chase, Osetkowski called off the pursuit as Lobo crossed Route 6 onto Sconticut Neck Road.
Lobo continued on Hathaway Street across Sconticut Neck Road and drove up on a lawn. The operator exited the vehicle, was pursued by officers, and was arrested on Hathaway Road. An empty holster was found in Lobo’s car. A State Police K-9 unit was called to assist in the search for the firearm, which was located under a bush in the area where the arrest occurred, said the police reports.
Lobo is charged with failing to stop for police, operating a motor vehicle so as to endanger, marked lanes violations, speeding, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol second offense, carrying a firearm without a license, possession with intent to distribute class A and B narcotics, A and B with a dangerous weapon, and unlawful possession of ammunition.
He was arraigned Monday in Wareham District Court and is being held.
