Power lines to be repaired on Weweantic July 1

Jun 29, 2014

NSTAR has announced that they will repair high tension power lines along the Weweantic River on July 1 after a second boat struck the lines about two weeks ago.

According to Wareham Harbormaster Garry Buckminster, NSTAR officials said the company would conduct repairs to a section of wires on the river, which is in between Wareham and Marion. The river will be closed to all vessel traffic during the repairs.

Buckminster said that until the high-tension power lines are repaired and returned to the height of 51’ as listed on the navigational chart #13236, he has requested that no sailing vessels or vessels in excess of 30’ from the waterline transit this area.

The power lines were initially damaged when a trimaran struck them on May 23, with the boat bursting into flames.  According to Buckminster, a second sailboat hit the lines about two weeks ago, snapping its mast in half.  No injuries were reported on either incident.
