Progress made on Fieldstone Farms in Marion

Jun 10, 2014

The redevelopment of the former Frigate Steakhouse is moving ahead and a new opening date has been set for spring 2015.

The building that housed the restaurant will be demolished soon to make way for Fieldstone Farms, a produce and ice cream stand on Route 6.

Rochester Planning Board member Arnie Johnson has spent the past three years earning approval for the work. Once opened the business will promote New England agriculture including vegetables and dairy items. Johnson had formerly worked for a wholesale produce company.

In the past, Johnson had set opening dates for 2013 and 2014, however, securing the proper permits took longer than expected.

During the application process a handful of neighbors stepped forward to express dismay regarding increased traffic and noise at the site. To alleviate those concerns, Johnson said he modified the initial plans.

Excavation crews have worked steadily to level the site. Three underground septic tanks will also be removed from the location at 806 Mill St.

The old restaurant was originally set to meet a fiery end.

“I had asked permission for the fire department to burn the building down,” Johnson said. The department may request a permit from the state’s Department of Environmental Protection for a controlled burn.

Johnson said he hadn’t heard from fire department officials in time and would tear down the building instead.

Fieldstone Farms would carry organic products such as milk, honey, cheese, fresh produce, dips, dressing and croutons. Johnson said he plans to operate the store year-round.
