Q&A with Rochester artist Sarah Brown

Jul 16, 2012

Sarah Brown says she’s been creating art her whole life.

On Thursday, July 12, she opened a beach-themed exhibit of watercolors and pastels at the Mattapoisett Library.

Here’s a little more about the Rochester-based artist:

Did you always do watercolors?

Yes and pastel. I also did fashion illustrating.

What have you done to hone your craft?

The process of painting hones it.

I could always draw but illustrating made me better at it because I had to be accurate. I took art in college and started illustrating.

Once I’d done that, I knew how to do watercolor because I’d been handling gouache.

What did you do in fashion?

I illustrated for the Outlet Company, Silversteins and Ann and Hope.

How long did you work on this exhibit?

This is a collection of things that I’ve done for almost two years.

There are some pastels and those are new.

When you are painting, do you go to a place or work from ideas?

I have ideas and I do sketches. I work from a sketchbook or photograph.

Do you paint everyday?

No. I’m very erratic.

What are you going to work on next?

I’m a novice with pastels. I’ve used them on my watercolors and I’ve always liked it. Next I’m going to a pastel workshop. For three days I’m mostly going to be painting. It’s usually hard to be that disciplined!
