Quakers invite public to write letters for Amnesty International

The Mattapoisett Friends Meeting House is inviting the public to a letter writing drop-in session for Amnesty International on Sunday, Sept. 22, from noon to 2 p.m.

Amnesty International is a global human rights organization that seeks to fight injustice. One aspect of the organization is “urgent action” letter writing campaigns that give people across the world the opportunity to speak out against human rights abuses.

“Sometimes it doesn’t do any good, but sometimes it does,” said Deena Kinsky, a member of the meeting house.

The Mattapoisett Friends have written letters for two years and were prompted by the work of Quakerhouse in Fayetteville, North Carolina, which advocates for peace.

Charlotte Purrington, a Mattapoisett Quaker, said writing letters helps educate people on injustices happening all over the world.

"I just felt it was something we should think about," said Purrington. "Nobody writes letters anymore, just emails. Letters speak for Amnesty more than email. Taking time writing handwritten or printed letters shows we are caring about someone who is locked up for political reasons."

She added that the letters, sent to international governments, are not brash demands for justice.

"You have to try to let them know that we’re concerned, and we’re counting on you to change your mind," said Purrington.

Kinsky said sample letters will be available on Sunday and people can write one letter or more.

“People can look at whatever topic speaks to them the most or can even pick up the information and take it home,” she said.

Some of the issues on Amnesty’s current list are 23 Syrians who face deportation from Egypt, two North Korean defectors who were forcibly returned to their country, and a Bahraini activist who was jailed for openly disagreeing with her country’s politics.
