Rabid fox captured in Mattapoisett

May 20, 2014

Mattapoisett Animal Control announced Tuesday that it captured a “disoriented” fox at Peases Point on Saturday.

The animal attacked a woman near the beach on Saturday.

It was killed, tested and found to be infected with rabies.

Residents throughout the town are reminded to report any animals that are behaving strangely to the police at 508-758-4141.

In January, animal control caught a raccoon with rabies and suspected another raccoon of being infected with the disease later that month.

At the time, Animal Control Officer Kathy Massey advised residents to make sure their pets are vaccinated.

“It’s imperative that you do that,” said Massey.

She also cautioned anyone who sees an animal acting strangely to stay away from it rather than trying to approach or catch it.
