Regattas sail through Marion Harbor

Aug 10, 2016

Marion Harbor has been abuzz this week as the Beverly Yacht Club hosted two regattas, bringing together boaters from Buzzards Bay and beyond.

Tuesday and Wednesday about 240 youth, ages 9 to 17, converged on the harbor for the club’s Junior Regatta, and over the weekend, Aug. 5 to 7, the club held the Buzzards Bay Regatta. Hosted by Marion and the New Bedford Yacht Club on alternating years, the event features boats large and small.

Barrett Levenson, chair of the race, said he considered the three-day event a success.

This year’s races included one major change – creating a separate event for junior sailors in 420 boats.

“We’ve spent the last two years really looking at who is BBR serving, how well are we doing and how can we improve,” said Levenson.

The race committee decided that the large number of junior sailors was overtaxing volunteers, so that class was split off into a new event hosted by the Community Boating Center of New Bedford.

“We used to have 140 boats max in the 420 class,” Levenson explained. “As a separate event, they had almost 200 boats.”

The two racing events were held the same weekend, and allowed the Beverly Yacht Club to focus more on adult boaters. Levenson said the regatta grew by about 20 percent this year.

“The motto was to be the friendliest regatta on the East Coast and to make it sustainable from the volunteer perspective. From my perspective it was very much a success.”

Almost 100 boats competed in the BBR. Complete results are at www.buzzardsbayregatta.com.
