Revoked aquaculture permits transfer possible

Oct 20, 2020

MARION — After resident Shea Doonan’s aquaculture permits were revoked on Sept. 8, he was mandated to remove his equipment from his farms within 60 days. If not, the Harbormaster’s office would come in and remove it for him.

But before either happens, Doonan came before Selectmen at an Oct. 20 meeting to suggest a possible transfer of his permits to interested candidates, some of whom are willing to buy all of his equipment and products on the site.

Doonan has been in talks with the Harbormaster’s office about the candidates to see if this was possible.

While Harbormaster Isaac Perry was accused by Doonan of delaying any moves past the 60 days on purpose, Perry said he is “certainly not looking to run out of time.” He added that this process could be done fairly quickly.

Perry said that it’s the Selectmen’s purview as to what to do going forward. The Board agreed that the town’s Marine Resources Commission should review the candidates.

Vice Chair John Waterman added that although selling the equipment could be taken into consideration of who is chosen, officials will ultimately select who they think is the best candidate for the permit based on merit.
