Richard E. “Dick” Lucas, 95

Sep 18, 2023

Richard E. “Dick” Lucas, 95, of Marion passed away peacefully at home on September 3, 2023. He was the husband of Anne Guldin Lucas. Dick had four sons—Richard, Christopher (who predeceased him), Jeffrey, and Peter, a stepson, John T. Ligget IV (married to Kathleen Walsh) and a daughter, Elizabeth Lucas Higgins (married to Christopher Higgins). Dick also had six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Dick was born in Wellesley, Massachusetts on August 30, 1928 to James Walter and Mary O’Brien Lucas. He was predeceased by his siblings, James, Mary Carens, and Joan Shepherd. After living in various parts of the country, primarily Atherton, California, he married Anne in 1984, which brought him to Pennsylvania. They spent 33 years in Haverford, Pennsylvania before moving to Marion, Massachusetts in 2017 to live closer to some of their blended family.

Dick was an entrepreneur in the financial services technology sector. Along with building businesses, Dick built fine furniture, including two stunning Grandfather’s Clocks. He also appreciated the craftsmanship of boats, including his beloved Karakia, which graced Sippican Harbor for several years.

Dick enjoyed sailing, golfing, gardening, the Arizona desert, biking—and later “triking”—around Marion village. He was a member of The Kittansett Club and the Beverly Yacht Club and a recent member of the Cleveland Ledge Investment Club. Dick embraced the latest and greatest in gadgets and technology. After retirement, he became a more dedicated chef—tinkering with recipes for ice cream and barbecued meats via the “smoker” he designed and produced. His margaritas were legendary. Dick had a twinkle in his eye and a joyful exuberance. With his eternal optimism, Dick made every occasion more fun for his family and friends and showed us what it meant to be young at heart—truly ageless.

Arrangements are private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to support the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, under Dr. Akshay Desai, and the Division of Infectious Diseases, under Dr. Ann Woolley—and in honor of Dr. Thomas O’Brien (Dick’s cousin)—at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Checks can be made payable to Brigham & Women’s Hospital with “in memory of Richard Lucas” in the memo line and sent to Brigham & Women’s Hospital Development Office, 263 Huntington Avenue, #318, Boston, MA 02115 or by visiting
