Rochester chief issues warning following two car crashes

Mar 7, 2014

Rochester police have determined that a serious accident on Tuesday, March 4 happened as the driver and passengers were on their way to visit the site of an accident where their friends had crashed the previous day.

The accidents both occurred on Neck Road, sent the drivers and passengers to the hospital and resulted in multiple charges for the drivers. The drivers and passengers were all Middleborough residents.

On Tuesday officer Kevin Flynn clocked 20-year-old Joshua Demoranville driving 100 mph on Neck Road. Flynn, who was driving in the opposite direction, turned on his lights, but Demoranville did not stop.

When the officer turned around, he saw a bright flash, drove around a bend and saw that Demoranville’s car had sheared off a telephone pole, rolled over and come to rest right side up next to another pole.

Demoranville was thrown approximately 30 feet from the vehicle. Passenger Antone Arruda, 18, was still in the car attempting to get out.

As additional personnel arrived on the scene, they located a third passenger later identified as Samuel Pike, 19, who was thrown more than 175 feet from the car. Police dispatch also received an anonymous call about a possible fourth victim.

Demoranville and Arruda were taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital. Pike was airlifted to Mass General Hospital.

Police later confirmed that only three people were in the car.

Police Chief Paul Magee said the men were not wearing their seat belts.

“If there’s no message I can deliver stronger, seat belts are so important,” said Magee. “Had they been [wearing seat belts], they would have stayed inside the vehicle, and their injuries would be much more insignificant than they are.”

Officer Flynn later learned that the three men were headed to see a crash site about a mile away on Neck Road that occurred on March 3 and involved their friends.

In that crash, two cars were racing across the Neck Road causeway at 77 mph in a residential area posted at 40 mph.

A police officer attempted to stop the cars but both fled. The officer followed the cars and found that one of them had crashed into a tree. The driver, a 17-year-old male, and his passenger, a 14-year-old girl, fled the scene.

The officer followed their footprints and arrested the driver. After a trip to Tobey Hospital for both the driver and passenger, the young man was charged with racing a motor vehicle, reckless operation, failure to stop for police, junior operator passenger restriction and leaving the scene of an accident.

The 17-year-old admitted he was racing another car but claimed not to know the driver’s identity. Police are still investigating the driver of the car that got away.

Regarding the March 4 accident, police filed charges against Demoranville for speeding, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police and failure to stay in marked lanes.

Although both accidents happened on Neck Road, Magee said that particular area isn’t known for racing.

“I don't think it's anything particular to that road,” he said. “We don’t have a history of crashes there.”

Police have filed paperwork to suspend the licenses of both drivers, and Magee is issuing a stern warning to the friends of those involved.

“We will be out in force running radar to ensure the safety of other drivers,” said Magee “Race in Rochester and you will lose your license.”

The condition of the men in Tuesday’s accident has not been released.
