The Rochester Council on Aging held an art show on Saturday afternoon to showcase some of the work residents had created.

“There’s a Monday morning paint group that meets here,” COA member Betty Beaulieu said. “Several of these artists have gone to art school.”

It was the first time the COA has done an art show, and Beaulieu said the turnout was high.

“It seems to be a success,” she said.

Much of the art on display was for sale, and the art ranged from oil painting to watercolor. There were prints of all sizes, hand painted coasters and even painted horseshoe crab shells.

“I collect them from horseshoe crab cove,” Terry Laspesa said. Joking, “I made that up myself.”

After years of collecting the shells, Laspesa decided she should do something with them. She cleaned and bleached them and decided to paint whatever came to mind. There was one painted in a Native American style, one painted for Mardi Gras and even one painted as Spiderman.

Much of the art was inspired by local scenery, such as the ocean, lighthouses, sunsets and ships.

A portion of the proceeds from the sales goes to the Senior Center.
