Rochester Council on Aging February events

ROCHESTER — The Rochester Senior Center will be closed for President’s Day then hold its annual Year of Remembrance event and other more regular events in February.  

The Rochester Council on Aging Building will be closed on Monday Feb. 18 for President’s Day. 

Meals and Food

Mike and Anne’s Special Lunch will be held on Monday, Feb. 25 at 12 p.m. Recommendations are recommended for the lunch and a donation of $5 would be appreciated.

The Greater Boston Food Bank provides roughly 30 pounds of free food items monthly to financially eligible seniors. Please contact Sharon
Lally, Director, or Lorraine Thompson, Outreach Coordinator, to see if you qualify. Participants must bring bags and pick-up and sign for their provisions at the Rochester Senior Center.

Hot meals are provided for seniors on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Rochester Senior Center. There is a voluntary donation of $2.00 for the lunches.

Transportation/Medical

Dr. Sarah Desrosiers, a podiatrist, is available by appointment on Thursday, Feb. 28. Interested seniors who have not seen her before should call her office to schedule an appointment. 508-946-1444. The doctor’s office will contact returning patients to confirm their appointment. The senior center also offers free blood pressure clinics weekly on Wednesday from 10 to noon.

The Senior Center can provide transportation for Rochester residents. It requests that those looking to use the service call to schedule a ride with one of our friendly drivers at least 24 hours in advance. The Senior Center also has a new interim van driver, Ann Soares of Rochester.

For medical appointments in Boston or Providence, reservations must be made two weeks in advance and there is a $5 charge, with the rest of the cost covered by grants. 

Arts and Special Events

The Senior Center shows movies every Friday at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome and there is no charge.

The Rochester Senior Book Club will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 10:15 a.m. at the Rochester Senior Center. February’s book is I Heard the Owl Call My Name, by Margaret Craven. The Plumb Library Director leads this group.

2018 Annual Year of Remembrance Program will be held Friday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. This event is an opportunity to celebrate the lives and memories of friends and volunteers of the Rochester Senior Center who passed away in 2018.

All are welcome to join the Senior Center for the event. Refreshments will be served, and there is no cost, but the organizers request that attendees RVSP, if possible, so they know how many people to expect.
