Rochester Fire Department uses donation for high-tech cameras
The Rochester Fire Department can now operate with state-of-the-art thermal imaging cameras, thanks to a $17,000 donation from Covanta Southeastern Massachusetts Resource Recovery Facility.
According to Rochester Fire Chief Scott Weigel, the department can use the cameras to see in low visibility areas and identify hazards—even through walls. Weigel said the cameras sense heat coming from objects and would appear white-colored. This would allow firefighters to pinpoint the problems right away.
“It helps with the investigation part of our jobs,” Chief Weigel said. “These cameras are the latest technology and we’ve got them on all four of our trucks. The donations are well spent.”
Chief Weigel added that the department decides what to spend funds on based upon what is most needed. It’s important, he said, that they do not waste the money given how expensive new equipment is. He said the cameras cost $6,700 each and will be enormously helpful in aiding the men during a crisis.
SEMASS Business Manager, Tom Cipolla and Outreach Coordinator Patti Howard were on hand to pass the check over to Chief Weigel. Both Cipolla and Howard said they were thrilled that their facility had the resources to be able to help out the town.
Rochester Town Administrator Rich LaCamera was also instrumental in organizing the gift, adding that ambulance calls have skyrocketed in recent years making a well-funded fire department crucial for the community.
For now, Chief Weigel said that the department has spent about $11,000 of the donation and will be discussing with his crew what is their highest priority regarding their next purchase.
