Rochester Open Space Plan volunteers sought

It’s time to update Rochester’s Open Space and Recreation Plan, and conservation officials said more volunteers are needed for the process.

On Monday, Conservation Agent Laurell Farinon told Selectmen the current plan expires in October. Without a plan the town isn’t allowed to apply for certain state grants.

Earlier this year, Town Administrator Mike McCue reached out to several departments via email at Farinon’s request.

“We have heard back from some people, but we could use more volunteers,” Farinon said. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”

The plan will outline goals and objectives Rochester has related to preserving land and creating opportunities for recreation.

The state requires that the plan be made with public input. Later this year, open forums will give residents the opportunity to say what the town’s open space goals should be.

Farinon said officials from the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District would be available for analysis and planning purposes. The agency offers planning assistance for transportation, economic and other issues to area towns.

To help fund the plan’s development, the town was awarded a $12,600 grant.
