Rochester, ORR change plan for elementary school solar project

ROCHESTER — If a solar array goes up at Rochester Memorial School it won’t be on the roof, that much is clear.

Last August, the town began looking at the possibility of putting solar panels on the roof at Rochester Memorial School.

Selectman Woody Hartley gave other board members an update on the project at an April 30 meeting, saying that ORR Facilities Director Eugene Jones had said the roof was too old for the panels and there were issues with the warranty.

Instead, Jones has been working with Rochester’s Facilites Director Andrew Daniel to put solar canopies on the school parking lot with Sunpower, the same California-based company that had proposed a similar project for the Old Rochester Regional Junior High School parking lot.

Selectman Paul Ciaburri asked if it would get in the way of plowing snow and whether highway surveyor Jeffrey Eldridge should be involved with the project.

Hartley responded that snow would not be able to get under the canopies, but that Eldridge would be involved later in the project’s planning process.
