Rochester Police flying high after owl, hawk rescues

Jan 6, 2025

ROCHESTER — Rochester Police swooped in to protect, serve and save two birds of prey _ a hawk and an owl _ during separate rescues in recent days.

The hawk was saved Jan 4 after its flight path hit a detour in the form of a car window.

Quick-thinking individuals rescued the wayward hawk and carefully transported the bird to the Rochester Police Station.

The avian visitor became the talk of the station, the department reported.

“Our officers promptly turned into bird whisperers,’’ the department reported on social media. “Our animal control officer was notified and flew to the station to assist.’’

The hawk is receiving medical help as the department earned its wings yet again.

Just days earlier, the department was involved in a hoot of a rescue involving an owl Dec. 29.

Eagle-eyed Sgt. Zachary Dupere noticed a “rather confused’’ owl on the side of the road “perched precariously’’ close to traffic.

Dupere “carefully approached the feathered friend, using his best ‘owl whispering’ skills,’’ the department shared. “With a gentle touch and a whole lot of patience, he was able to rescue the little guy from his roadside dilemma.’’

The bird is now safe and Dupere has earned a new title among his colleagues: "Owl-fficer of the Year.’’

Rochester Police urge residents to stay safe and be alert. After all, you never know whooo you will run into it _ or what might run into you.
