Rochester snow removal costs pose budget problem

Winter hit Rochester hard financially and town officials want to lessen the blow.

Snow removal cost more than $100,000 this winter, Town Administrator Mike McCue told Selectmen on Monday.

“That’s a considerable amount of money in this budget,” McCue said.

He said pending state legislation might give cities and towns alternative ways to pay the bill.

One possibility may allow towns to pay half of the snow removal costs this year and then pay the rest the following year.

Selectman Richard Nunes said that wasn't an ideal solution.

“The problem is we’ll be in the same boat next year,” Nunes said.

McCue said it’s too soon to say if that’s a viable option.

“The way the legislation has been presented has been so vague I can’t make a recommendation at this point,” McCue said. “But the state is trying to do something.”
