Rochester tables 'housekeeping' article at Special Town Meeting

An article to amend a section of Rochester’s Agricultural/Residential District regulations got some resistance at the Special Town Meeting.

The article, brought by the Planning Board, established setback footage for various types of structures. It also changed the wording for a business operated at a residence from “home occupation” to “home business.”

Zoning Board of Appeals Chair Richard Cutler spoke out against the article at the meeting on Monday.

“I think it goes beyond just housekeeping. I see more negative than positives,” said Cutler. “It is providing options for business to open up just about anywhere in town without oversight.”

Cutler said the Planning Board is trying to fix something that isn’t broken, and the wording of the amendment needs closer examination.

“There’s no question in my mind that Rochester is no longer rural, but most of the people in town enjoy the rural characteristics and want to preserve them,” said Cutler.

Cutler recommended that the town table the amendment, which received unanimous approval.
