Rochester's Country Fair features fun, fiddlin' and festivities
Kids and adults are being encouraged to get in touch with their inner caveman for the 16th annual Rochester Country Fair, held Thursday, Aug. 13 through Sunday, Aug. 16.
This year fair organizers adopted a “prehistoric” theme for the event, that will include a dinosaur egg hunt, Pebbles and Bam Bam Contests and even some reptiles.
The Bwana Iguana Interactive Reptile Show returns on 1:30 p.m. on Sunday in the Children’s Arena.
Rochester Country Fair Committee member Mike Koczera said there are a number of new attractions this year, in addition to popular traditions such as the Woodsmen Competition and tractor pulls.
At 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Robert Clarke, a juggler and magician who performs at Faneuil Hall, will showcase his comedy and entertainment skills at the fair.
If you’re looking for live music, 16-year-old guitarist Aaron Norcross Jr. of Marion will perform with his band “Aaron Norcross Jr. and The Old Dogs” from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday. Headlining the fair this year is Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band, “Vyntyge Skynyrd.” That show starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Also performing will be “The Showstoppers" from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and “Moment of Clarity” on the same day from 5:45 to 7 p.m. A fiddle contest will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday under the fair’s big tent.
Koczera said the live auction returns on Thursday and will be held from 6 to 9 p.m.
With farm tools, livestock, furniture, auto parts and more on the auction block, Koczera said there is no shortage of variety.
“There could be anything and everything up for sale,” Koczera said. “Last year, the auction worked out really well and we wanted to bring it back.”
If one event is to remain on the schedule, Koczera said people need to show support.
“This is a make it or break it year for the parade,” he said, adding that low attendance in previous years has the event on the bubble.
Parade participants meet at 8 a.m. at Rochester Memorial School. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. The route takes the parade down Pine Street, Snipatuit Road and Hartley Road before ending back at the school.
Two of the fair’s most popular draws, the tractor pull and Woodsman Show, are back this year.
The Woodsman Show Competition is set for Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. where wood ships will fly in contests that include crosscut, disk stacking, pulp toss, underhand chop and more.
Tractor and truck pull competitions will be held on all four days of the fair. On Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., the Southern New England Truck Pullers Association will be competing. Visit www.snetpa.com for club information.
Check out the antique tractor pull competition from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the antique tractor transfer sled pull will be held.
Fair traditions such as the pie-eating contest and frog derby will be held on Saturday from 4 to 5 p.m. and Sunday at noon, respectively.
There’s no shortage of children’s activities at the fair, including a Nerf Olympics from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, a Bam Bam Strong Man contest for kids 4 to 12 years old from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. on Thursday and wheelbarrow, three-legged and hula hoop races from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the main arena.
