Runners find their stride at 5th annual Turkey Trot
It’s easy to spot seagulls on Tabor Academy’s campus. But it was turkeys – well, people wearing turkey accessories – participating in the annual Turkey Trot there on Sunday.
Marion Recreation Department Director Jody Dickerson said 225 participants arrived for Sunday's 5k race despite the cool, rainy conditions.
He said that number was down compared to last year.
“The weather plays a part in it,” he said, adding that participation in road races across the state dipped this year.
Overall, he was pleased with the event, which serves as a fundraiser for the Marion Recreation Department’s scholarship program.
Holly Clavell and her daughter Bridget came from Acushent for the race.
Wearing turkey hats and ringing bells, they cheered on members of the St. Francis Xavier School’s cross country team.
“The whole team is running,” Holly said. “We wanted to show our support.”
Adam Sylvia, a ninth grade student from Rochester, took first place overall with a time of 17:51.
This marked his fourth time participating and first win overall.
The Turkey Trot, sponsored by Guard Oil, celebrated its 5th anniversary this year.
Second and third place overall finishers were Alec Wall and Geoffrey Noonan, both Marion residents, with times of 18:33 and 18:41, respectively.
The first female finisher was Julie Craig of Mattapoisett who placed fifth overall with a time of 20:23.
