Safety patrol raises money for D.C. field trip
Sippican School's "safety patrol" hosted a community yard sale Saturday morning to help pay for a trip to Washington D.C.
The idea came from enrichment teacher Stacy Soucy who has been with the school for the past six years. Soucy wanted to help raise the money for 35 of the Sippican’s Safety Patrol students to tour the nation’s capital.
The safety patrol, she said, helps out with the arrival and the dismissal of the students by holding doors or directing them where they should go.
For the past three weeks Soucy has been reaching out to local residents through the press and with emails asking for any donations to the sale.
“We thought of the yard sale because we were trying not to have the kids go and sell something and we didn’t want to have to put something else on the parents,” Soucy said. “We thought this was a good way for the families to clean-out and for us to earn the money.”
Soucy received enough donations to fill the large front foyer of the school. For help with the visitors and manning the tables Soucy enlisted the Safety Patrol. The students walked around making sure everyone could find what they needed and they handled the check-out line.
According to Soucy, the Sippican School will be planning additional fund raisers with another yard sale most likely happening in the spring.
