School choice lottery gives 11 students admission to ORR
Old Rochester Regional High School conducted its school choice lottery on Wednesday to fill 11 open spots.
The school choice program allows a district to accept out of district students. The state gives each district $5,000 per school choice student.
ORR accepted its first school choice students in 2010 and currently has 72 slots. This year, the ORR School Committee voted to keep the number of school choice slots the same. All but 11 are already filled.
Principal Mike Devoll said 38 students applied for the openings. Ten of the students were ninth graders and one was an 11th grader.
The new school choice students are from the following towns: Acushnet, Carver, Fairhaven, Fall River, Middleboro, New Bedford and Wareham. A Mattapoisett student who will be moving out of the district was also chosen.
