Scout builds bridge on trail to Eagle
Hikers using the White Eagle Trail will be left high and dry (in a good way) following the completion of Jack Nakashian’s Eagle project.
The 17-year-old Old Rochester student secured materials and volunteers to complete a 160-foot wooden boardwalk. The walkway will cross wetlands on the Sippican Lands Trust’s 248-acre White Eagle property, one of the trust’s largest parcels.
The project will cap a long career in scouting for Nakashian, who joined Troop 32 in the third grade as a Wolf Scout.
The boardwalk also compliments a nearby bridge built last year by Jack Gordon for his Eagle Scout project that allows walkers to safely cross a stream.
With so much work done by members of Troop 32, Nakashian said a name change might be in order for the trail.
“We’re thinking of changing the name from the White Eagle Trail to the Eagle Trail,” Nakashian joked.
After securing funds from the Greater New Bedford United Way and materials from Home Depot and Mahoney’s Building Supply, Nakashian started construction four weeks ago.
On Saturday, a handful of scouts and leaders hammered boards together while standing in the muddy water surrounding the boardwalk.
Nakashian said the warm weather put the project ahead of schedule. He has until his 18th birthday in May to finish the requirements needed to become an Eagle, scouting’s highest rank.
“I’d like to be done today,” he said, adding that another day or two of work was likely needed.
