Seafood rolls, chowder dinner lead into Harbor Days

Jul 15, 2011

The big tent in Shipyard Park was filled with food, people, and Lions Friday evening to welcome the 25th annual Harbor Days. The event: a seafood roll and clam chowder dinner. More than 70 Lions contributed to the dinner and kept the hungry crowd coming back for more. Also available: the Lions' famous strawberry shortcake.

Along with the dinner, raffle tickets were sold for Sunday evening’s drawing. A silent auction was held, with such prizes as a romantic dinner for two at the Mattapoisett Inn and an official Red Sox jersey. One of the hotter items, though, was a six-hour sailing tour and lunch provided by On the Go.

Club President Don Bamberger thought it was a great start to the weekend.

“There’s not many seats empty here,” he said. “It’s a popular event.”

Bamberger said the night’s musical entertainment, Couto and Mulligan, was also a big draw. The trio of guitars and vocals kept the crowd entertained well after the food was gone.

“The weather’s going to be perfect," Bamberger added. "We’re really expecting a good show of people.”

Resident Walter Wordell said the food is one of his favorite things about Harbor Days. He comes by every year, and Friday’s meal was just as good as last years.

“The chowder, the coleslaw, it’s all delicious,” he said. “And I like the strawberry shortcake.”

Food at the Harbor Days is one of the biggest parts of the weekend with “Lobsterfest” Saturday evening and a pancake and sausage breakfast Sunday. There will also be raffle prizes like sports tickets and an iPad 2, harbor tours and whaleboat rowing excursions from the Whaling City Rowing Club. Proceeds from the events will go to the multiple charities the Lions Club supports.
