Search continues for missing Marion man
Thursday marked the third day of the search for 21-year-old Dana Dourdeville as authorities continued to look for signs of the missing Marion man as a winter storm bore down on the region.
Fairhaven police discovered Dourdeville’s kayak late Tuesday night. The searchers include the Coast Guard, members of Fairhaven’s Police and Fire Departments, the town’s harbormaster, New Bedford police and state police who scoured West Island and Little Bay for Dourdeville.
According to police, Dourdeville left his home around 2 p.m. on Tuesday with his 9-foot long red kayak. When he hadn’t returned by sundown his mother went to West Island where she found his parked car, but no other signs of her son.
Police believe he may have been hunting in the area. The island’s eastern half is home to a large piece of conservation land popular with outdoor enthusiasts.
According to Fairhaven police, Dourdeville’s kayak was found with a single glove inside, and it did not appear the boat had capsized.
On Thursday morning, a Fairhaven police dispatcher said the department had no further updates at this time. Since Dourdeville went missing, temperatures have been at or below freezing, dipping into the low teens at night.
Police described Dourdeville as being about 5 feet, 10 inches tall with brown hair. He was wearing brown Carhartt pants and a red life jacket. According to police, Dourdeville was thought to have gone duck hunting and was armed with a shotgun when he left. Police said the gun has not yet been found.
Phone calls to Coast Guard officials have not yet been returned.
Neighbors of Dourdeville said he was a top student at Old Rochester Regional High School who excelled in track and field. He is currently enrolled at Brown University in Rhode Island.
He graduated from ORR in 2011 as the school’s valedictorian. ORR Assistant Principal Mike Parker said the school held a moment of silence for Dourdeville on Thursday morning.
A vigil will be held Thursday, Jan. 2 at Marion’s First Congregational Church at 5 p.m. for Dourdeville.
