Selectmen discuss annex plan

Although the Annex Building Committee’s isn’t ready to officially present a plan to the town, the group currently favors an option that would incorporate all town departments, said Town Administrator Mike McCue.

The committee has been charged with seeking a better solution than housing the overflow of town departments in a rented space, currently a portion of the Rochester Woman's Club's headquarters.

Speaking at Monday night’s Selectmen meeting, McCue said, “What makes the most sense is a building that incorporates all of the town functions.”

But he also said there have been no feasibility studies done on the idea.

While McCue stressed how preliminary the idea is, Selectmen were concerned about the expense of such a project and residents’ approval.

“We need to be very, very prudent when we come to them about money,” Selectman Naida Parker said.

About 10 years ago voters shot down a pricey Town Meeting article for a new Town Hall. Parker said building a new Town Hall would be a hard sell with residents who are attached to the historic one in Rochester center.

“People are very invested in this building. They're not enthusiastic about having a town hall somewhere else,” she said.

Another option would be to add onto the historic Town Hall, but that would come with its own expensive problems, said Parker. She explained that adding onto the building would likely require bringing the whole building up to code.

Selectman Richard Nunes said if a new building were in order, now is the time to make the decision.

“Rates will be going up,” he said.

Selectman also suggested the committee prepare a backup plan.

“The idea is we don’t want to pay rent anymore. I don’t think that’s a secret,” said Nunes.
