Selectmen reflect on outdoor Town Meeting, communication needs

Aug 26, 2020

MATTAPOISETT — Holding Town Meeting outdoors under a tent in the middle of August could pose a lot of issues. But as Selectmen reflected on the Meeting at an Aug. 26 meeting, they found that it went off without a hitch, and discussed solutions about communication issues involved with an article item and the Meeting itself.

“I thought it went well under the circumstances,” Select Board Chair Paul Silva said.

All three Selectmen thanked Town Administrator Michael Lorenco and his team for orchestrating the Meeting.

“As a town, I think we should be proud” for how the town approached holding a Town Meeting amidst a pandemic, Selectman Jordan Collyer said.

Going forward, he said that the town should look to improve ways to get the word out about date, place and time of future Town Meetings.

Selectman John DeCosta suggested using signs around town to alert residents like the municipality of Bourne does.

At the Town Meeting, a resident asked to see the school budget in the form of a line by line breakdown to examine all expenses.

Selectmen couldn’t provide this information at Town Meeting, but said at the Aug. 26 meeting that residents should be able to access the detailed budget beforehand.

“The questions wouldn’t have come up unless we had better communication,” Collyer said.

Since the school budget makes up 60% of the taxpayer’s burden, Silva suggested that Selectmen help promote school meetings and budget hearings.

But Lorenco said that this detailed budget should be available to everyone.

“If they’re willing to give it to the school committees, they should be willing to give it to the public,” he said.
