Shining Tides area to reopen for shellfishing

Jul 31, 2020

MATTAPOISETT — Shellfishing will reopen at dawn on Aug. 3 in the Shining Tides area of the Mattapoisett Harbor after an examination by the state showed that the area meets the requirements for harvesting.

Harvesting will be allowed from the eastern mouth of Eel Pond, to the “no shellfishing” sign at 3 Port Way, and all the way to the end of Reservation Road will be open again.

According to the state, the shellfish can be consumed by humans in accordance with local laws. The quahogs were transplanted from the Taunton River by the Division of Marine Fisheries as a way to remediate a 2003 oil spill in the harbor.
