Silvershell Beach-goers share memories

Liam O'Donnell, 19, Janine Murray, 19, and Hank Murray, 8, spend a lot of time at Silvershell, and know there is more than one thing to love about the beach. "I like to eat slushies," Hank said. "And I like to swim. The past three years I started swimming here." Janine likes the mornings at the beach. "The sun rises here," she said. "So sometimes I like to come up here at four or five in the morning and sit in the lifeguard chairs and watch the sunrise." O'Donnell agreed. "I can get on board with that," he said. Marion Recreation held its annual Opening Week Beach Party at Silvershell Beach on Saturday. As people enjoyed free hotdogs, drinks and chips, they were able to reflect back on some of their favorite things about Silvershell Beach.

Jennifer Eames, 4-year-old son Grayson and Lorna Eames enjoy the day in the sun."I remember being a kid, and growing up and finally being old enough to ride my bike here with friends," Jennifer said. Lorna added, "We're fortunate to have a local beach like this. It's a good safe place for kids." BY TANNER HARDING

Mary Lou McGill and her daughter Elizabeth McGill have many memories at Silvershell. "I think of Grammy," Elizabeth said. Mary Lou thinks of when she was little. "I used to come here for swimming lessons when I was 7 or 8," Mary Lou said. "Now I'm in my 70s, so I've been coming here a long time." BY TANNER HARDING

Marion Selectmen and Marion Recreation Executive Director Jody Dickerson served food at the opening day beach party. "When I'm here I remember the old beach director Dick Duffy, who was here for thirty years," Dickerson said. "You think of Silvershell Beach, you think of Dick Duffy." BY TANNER HARDING

Dave and Chris Watling enjoy the sun and sand in their usual spots at Silvershell Beach. "I love the fireworks here," Chris said. "I love knowing everyone at the beach. It's a great beach and very family friendly." Dave loves to remember his son exploring marine life. "When my son was young and would come with his friends, they would go at low tide and look at the crabs and crayfish," he said. BY TANNER HARDING

Glenn Lukowicz has been running the concession stand at Silvershell Beach for 15 years and loves many things about this particular beach."I started this snack shack 15 years ago and the prices have not changed," he said. "The combination of shoreline and grass, the 20 acres of park-like beach. You have a diverse setting here. The balance is unbelievable. Look at this place! People can play racquetball, soccer. Where else can you get everything under one sky? Kids can be kids here...it's a family environment. Truly a family beach." BY TANNER HARDING
