Sippican Historical and Preservation Society seeks Marion artifacts
The Sippican Historical and Preservation Society found a few gaps in their knowledge and could use your help.
Curator Pete Smith has been digging for photos, information or anything relating to a number of historical sites and figures in town and has yet to turn up anything and now he’s appealing to the public for help.
“The Kittansett Club had a battery of anti-aircraft guns during World War II,” said Smith. “Today, we have no pictures. Nobody does.”
The Kittansett during WWII, the Gateway Bus service, Silvershell Beach prior to its expansion in the 1950s and more are on Smith’s wishlist.
“The Gateway Bus line was the last public transportation in Marion,” said Smith about the Buzzards Bay to Mattapoisett line that went out of business in the 1970s.
Old postcards of the South Street Fire Station are also on the list along with postcards of the old Sippican Hotel that show the hotel with a few artistic embelishments.
“Postcards, now, you can’t accept those as being gospel,” said Smith.
Pete's full list is:
Kittansett Club During World War II
Gateway Bus line
Silvershell Beach before 1953
The Hornet's Nest store
Postcards of the South Street Fire Station
Sippican Hotel prior to its final restoration
