The military medals of longtime Marion resident Col. George W. Carrington are on display at the Sippican Historical Society. His friend, John P. Kendall of Marion, received the medals following Carrington’s death. Kendall framed the medals and donated them to the society.

Carrington was born on Jan. 5, 1921 and died Feb. 21 this year. He graduated from Yale University in 1942, after which he began a career in the United States Marine Corps. He fought in the Pacific theatre during World War II, where he received many medals including the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. He also received medals for his service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

After his military career, he earned a doctorate in Chinese history from Oxford University in England. He also wrote many books and served as dean of faculty at the Marine Military Academy. The community is invited to view the collection.
