Sippican Lands Trust to host Radio Tower property walk

Aug 29, 2017

Join Dick Evans, local historian from the Sippican Historical Society, for a tour of the Sippican Lands Trust’s Radio Tower Property in Marion.

The walk will take place on Saturday September 9, at 10 a.m.

The walk will explore the site of what was once one of the largest wireless telegraph stations in the world.

The Radio Tower property features old radio tower foundations for antennas used to track enemy submarines off the coast of Massachusetts during World War I and World War II.

The radio towers and transmitting equipment were removed from the site in the early 1960s and the property has now returned to its natural state. The Sippican Lands Trust acquired the 144 acre-property in 1986.

The Radio Tower trail is accessible from Benson Brook Road, past the Marion Transfer Station, and parking is available in that area. Participants should gather near the Sippican Lands Trust kiosk at the head of the trail.

Bring water and dress appropriately for the day’s weather-—only the worst weather will cancel an Sippican Lands Trust walk.

If a walk is canceled, information will be posted to the Lands Trust’s website and Facebook page.
