Sixth graders best parents, teachers on the court

Sixth grade supporters on the sidelines were split over who would win the annual match up of students v. teachers and parents, but referee Eric Lopes said the youth tend to get the upper hand...sort of.

"Usually the kids [win] with a little help from the officials," joked referee Eric Lopes.

But Alexa Zell had a good reason why her fellow sixth graders would take home bragging rights.

"A lot of the boys play basketball and a lot of the girls play basketball, so they're pretty good," she said.

Every year the Sippican School kids face off against their elders in a basketball game to raise money for their hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail.

The lighthearted game was fast moving as each side scored early and often. There was one short pause as retired gym teacher and referee Joe Resmini ushered teacher Tracy Feeney to the trash can to spit out her gum. Once a gym teacher, always a gym teacher!

The game also saw a number of familial match ups, with sons and daughters guarding mothers and fathers.

And as Lopes predicted, the kids took home the victory, ending 37-33.
