WITH SLIDESHOW: Bikers make a fundraising run through Rochester
Relay for Life may be June 8, but local Harley Davidson enthusiasts geared up for it with a fundraiser on Sunday, June 3.
Residents gathered at the Ponderosa for the fourth annual Bike Run to benefit the American Cancer Society.
Co-organizer Odd Johannessen said the event’s inception began as a fundraiser among his SEMASS co-workers, who also participated in Relay for Life.
“This is just one way we could do a fundraiser and it’s great,” Johanessen said. “We don’t race. It’s a run.”
To participate, riders donated $10. After the run, they gathered once again at the Ponderosa for raffles, music and food.
After the first year, the group lost one of their own in 2009.
Since then, the event has been dedicated in memory of Ernie Blais.
Fairhaven Fire Chief Tim Francis, a cancer survivor, has participated in the annual run since the beginning.
“It’s really a great cause,” he said. “My wife, Pamela, is really involved in the Relay for Life. I’m all about good causes.”
