With Slideshow: Lions Club Triathlon draws athletes for a good cause
Whether it was from the swimming, the biking, the running or the sun, everyone at the Mattapoisett Lions Club Triathlon felt the burn.
The 8 a.m. race on Sunday, July 8 began with a 0.25-mile swim at the Town Beach, followed by a 10-mile bike ride and a 3.4-mile run.
Fresh off the July 4th Mattapoisett Road Race, 12-year-old Kate Hughes was ready for her first triathlon.
“I already did swim team. I run in a lot of races,” she said. “I just had to practice biking.”
Kate, who is headed to ORR Junior High in the fall, said she picked up running because her mother is an avid racer.
“It’s kind of what I do,” she said.
Kate said she wanted to come in ahead of the 120 person mark. She exceeded her own expectation by coming in 80 overall.
For Peter Green of Newton, just finishing the race was his goal.
This year was Green’s fifth at the triathlon.
“I like this one because it’s for charity,” he said. “This one is nice because it’s for the town.”
Race chair Tom Muldoon, who has organized the triathlon for nearly two decades, said the proceeds from the event would go to local and international causes.
Muldoon was pleased with the turn out.
Although the race was held a week early this year, it drew 170 individual competitors and 23 relay teams.
From race updates by Kim Camara of New Bedford’s Yesteryear Cyclery to Mattapoisett EMTs on standby, Muldoon said community participation is key.
“There are probably 50 Lions Club Members on the race course today and 15 firemen who donate their time,” said Muldoon. “I’m thankful for the support.”
