Soul-funk band to start playing in Marion Nov. 8

Starting Nov. 8, award-winning soul-funk and jazz band The Groovalottos will perform in Marion the second Saturday of each month.

Concerts start 8 p.m. in Gilda’s Stone Rooster, located at 27 Wareham Road.

Based on Cape Cod, The Groovalottos include award-winning studio session and touring musicians. Mwalim “DaPhunkee Professor” is the 2010, 2012 and 2014 winner of the “Best Male Jazz” category of the New England Urban Music Awards and currently a nominee in the Native American Music Awards for “Instrumental Album of the Year.”

Both Eddie Ray Johnson (drums) and Chris “Red Bone” Sweeting (bass) have played over the last 30 years with a variety of major and minor rock, funk, blues and gospel artists and bands.

In January, they received the Silver Arrow Award for their contributions to contemporary Native American music. This past summer, the band performed throughout New England, the tri-state area, as well as Maryland and Virginia. They are currently completing their first album for Spirit Wind Records.
