Special Town Meeting approves $30,000 for Habitat for Humanity house

To help offset costs for building the first Habitat for Humanity home in Marion, Special Town Meeting unanimously approved a $30,000 donation to the project.

On Monday night, the town’s registered voters approved that $10,000 each be taken from the town’s Open Space Acquisition Commission budget, Community Housing, and the estimated 2013 annual revenues to support the home.

George McTurk, president of Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Trustees, was on hand to discuss the project’s development since it was first proposed in 2009.

“We’re excited because it’s the first one in Marion,” McTurk said.

McTurk said that Habitat for Humanity has been busy screening applicants for the proposed 1,100 square-foot house, which is set to be located at 185 Wareham Road on Route 6.

To meet qualifications for Habitat for Humanity and affordable housing, the selected family must meet the income requirements as determined by the state, be employed, be able to pay a monthly mortgage, and contribute 300 man hours to the construction of the house.

The project received Planning Board approval last spring, but construction was delayed while the final agreement between the town and Habitat for Humanity was being drafted.

Construction is set to begin on Saturday. McTurk said an existing structure on the land will be torn down to make way for the foundation of the new home.

The house has been designed by Saltonstall Architects and will include three bedrooms and one bathroom as well as solar panels on the roof to cut down on electricity costs for the owners.
