State primary sees low turnout in tri-town
The state’s primary election Tuesday generated little interest in the tri-town as voters nominated candidates for governor, attorney general and other state offices.
The Massachusetts general election will be held Nov. 4.
In Rochester, the high vote getter for governor was Republican Charlie Baker with 174 votes. A businessman, Baker ran for governor in 2010. Former Attorney General and Democrat Martha Coakley earned 122 votes.
Town Clerk Naida Parker noted that turnout was low for the election in her town. Of Rochester’s 4,063 registered voters only 587 of them cast ballots.
“It was a very quiet day for us,” Parker said.
Marion voters also tapped Baker for the governorship. He earned 200 votes to Coakley’s 185 votes.
Assistant Marion Town Clerk Michele Bissonnette reported that voter turnout was slightly better. Seven hundred twenty four of the town’s 3,749 went to the polls, which marked a 19 percent voter turnout.
In Mattapoisett, 947 voters came to the polls out of 4,682 registered.
Baker took the most votes in the Republican governor race with 233 to Mark Fisher with 73. For the Democratic candidate, Grossman received the top number of votes with 265, followed closely by Coakley with 255 votes. Berwick received 96 votes.
