Storm leads to accidents, power outages

Friday's snowstorm saw a number of downed power lines and trees as well as a few accidents.

Rochester Police responded to a spate of accidents during the height of the storm, said Police Chief Paul Magee.

"The biggest problem comes when people are out and about in the storms," he said.

The department responded to four accidents in five hours, including a Budget rental truck that jumped a guard rail, causing a fuel leak in the process. The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Route 28 near SEMASS.

The Department of Environmental Protection and State Police also responded to the accident, which took about two hours to clear. In the process, another accident occurred at 1:20 p.m. One car was stopped due to the accident and was rear ended by another vehicle that failed to break in time. Magee said the car was moving too quickly around a corner.

A few minutes later near the 400 block of Walnut Plain Road, an ABC Disposal truck collided with a tree, and around 2:15 p.m. two cars on County Road collided at the railroad tracks. That incident sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

"Almost all these accidents are attributed to speeds that were greater than reasonable or proper for the road conditions," Magee said.

In addition to traffic accidents, Magee said his department was called out to at least 25 incidents of downed power lines and/or trees. At one point in the storm, there were more than 70 Eversource customers in Rochester without power. Mattapoisett also saw more than 50 outages. Numbers for Marion were not available.

"It was obviously very hectic," said Chief Magee, but the rush slowed later in the day as fewer people were on the roads and the storm died down.

As of Saturday morning, Rochester still had 26 customers without power, Mattapoisett had nine and Marion had five.
