If the Titanic had sailed into Mattapoisett Harbor, it wouldn’t have sank. There are no icebergs in Buzzards Bay, afterall. At least, this is the reasoning of a group of Old Rochester Regional Junior High students who named their cardboard boat the JHS Titanic.

“We named it that because it looks unsinkable,” Ethan McElroy said about naming the boat after the doomed ship.

It seems McElroy, his brother Lucas McElroy, Max Vivino and Caleb Devoe were onto something, as they had one of the fastest race times of the day.

The foursome was part of the junior high group that took to the seas instead of the woods, choosing to take part in cardboard boat races in Mattapoisett Harbor, rather than participating in the Survival camping trip.

Students were free to design their boats however they saw fit, with a few exceptions: it could only be made using cardboard and duct tape, and the tape can’t cover the entire boat.

Alyssa Fornaro, Savannah Texeira, Hanna Texeira, Haley Andrews and Maya Mcleod, creators of the fan-favorite boat Aquafart, decided to use cardboard tubes in their design.

“We used tubes because they have air in them so they’ll help us float,” Fornaro said.

The group of Matthew Curry, Ethan Scully and Benjamin Preece-Santos focused more on the aesthetics, and went for a Viking-themed boat.

“Dragons are cool and we saw a lot of Viking boats online, so we did that,” Curry said.

However, Viking flags and dragon designs aside, they didn’t ignore the practical side either.

“We put a lot of layers,” Scully said. “Just a ton of layers of cardboard.”
