Summer Bike Challenge to culminate in award ceremony Sept. 19

Aug 25, 2015

On Saturday, Sept. 19, cyclists from 14 area communities will ride to the YMCA Dartmouth to celebrate the completion of the 2nd Annual Summer Bike Challenge.

Mattapoisett cyclists have participated in the challenge all summer, and all who are interested in attending the award ceremony can put on their helmets and ride there with the group. Cyclists will meet on Depot Street at 9 a.m. on Sept. 19 to ride to the YMCA. They will approach Mattapoisett Neck Road at the bike trail around 9:15 a.m.

More than 110 cyclists have ridden more than 56,000 miles since May 1 and hope to reach 60,000 miles by Labor Day for the South Coast Bikeway Alliance Team. The team is part of the National Bike Challenge.

Riders will gather at the YMCA Dartmouth's Fall Festival and be recognized for their accomplishments.

Prizes will be awarded, including first, second and third place male and female in each community. Additionally, the community that logs the most miles (per capita) will receive a trophy.

Come see what the South Coast Bikeway Alliance is doing towards their goal of achieving a 50-mile continuous system of bike paths and bike lanes that will connect Rhode Island and Cape Cod.

The YMCA Dartmouth is located at 276 Gulf Road and the ceremony begins at 11 a.m. Cyclists are encouraged to ride their bicycles to the event.

The bike challenge concludes on Sept. 30. Visit the National Bike Challenge at nationalbikechallenge.org to log miles.

The South Coast team was ranked 27th in the National Bike Challenge at the time of this publication.
