Superintendent reviews Rochester school budget draft

A three percent, or $165,891, increase is currently on tap for the Rochester school budget. At Thursday night’s Rochester School Committee, Superintendent Doug White said that number is still subject to change.

“Over the next several weeks we will continue to fine tune it,” said White.

Contract changes and shifting teachers to different positions account for several adjustments in line items. Additionally, the district has yet to receive budget numbers from new Gov. Charlie Baker. Those are not due until the first of March.

In the meantime, operations and maintenance have increased 2.8 percent or almost $13,000.

“We’re addressing the increases in utility costs that will be needed for next year considering the hikes in utilities,” White said.

There is also a $20,000 increase for technology to meet the qualifications for a grant received in January that will boost the school’s Internet connectivity.

The Selectmen still need to review the proposal, but White said the current draft is solid.

“Overall, I think the budget is in good shape. These dollars would allow us to move education forward in Rochester,” he said.

The community will have the opportunity to comment on the budget during a public hearing in March. The Rochester School Committee is expected to approve a final budget at its April meeting.
